VPN Services Work!

by Stuart Fisk

VPN stands for virtual private network and is commonly used by organizations to provide remote access to a secure organizational network. For instance, you are working from home and you need to access files in your computer at the office or connect to applications that are available only via your office network. If your office has VPN installed and your laptop or home computer is configured to connect to it, you can get what you need from the office without having to worry about the security of the data transported over the Internet.

For ordinary users, however, they would know VPN as a means to hide their email address so that they can surf the Internet anonymously or bypass web site access restrictions such as firewalls. An example would be a user on VPN being able to avail of Internet television when this would be normally blocked on his computer.

You can find many providers online offering VPN services at different rates. It depends on how the service will be used. If you need it just to browse web site content (no downloading or streaming), you can get it cheaply (as low as $5 per month) or even for free!

But to be able to do more than browsing Internet content and be anonymous at the same time, you will need a premium VPN account. This is easily available, since most providers try to make the set up process as painless as possible for you – easy to follow instructions, no software to install, no IP numbers to configure into web applications, etc. Depending on the provider, the subscription may include a choice of server locations (to be able to visit sites that would normally block your IP address), strong encryption (the data you entered will be encrypted when transmitted over the Internet and make it difficult for hackers to get) and dedicated IP address (you have your own IP address, instead of having a different one every time you log on to the VPN).

There are many VPN service providers out there, and you can narrow your list by deciding how you want to use the service. Browsing? Downloading? Watching Internet television? All of the above? More importantly, look for and read the terms and conditions of service of the provider you are vetting. There may be some restrictions against \”illegal\” activity, usually involving downloading of intellectual property such as music and literature.

\”Try before you buy\” is another good rule. Providers who have nothing to hide will not hesitate to offer a trial period. It is one of the best ways to determine if their service is the one you want.

Check the Internet speed: Is the speed reliable or are there certain times of the day when browsing or downloading is inconvenient? Assess the timeliness and quality their technical support: How long before they respond to questions or help requests? How well do they understand your concerns and were they able to help? Bottom line: Is the service worth the cost?

Online forums are good sources of feedback on particular VPN service providers. Customer testimonials are well and good, but then you hardly read anything negative in those. With online forums, if you read a lot of negative feedback on a provider from different people, that may be a sign that you shouldn\’t do business with that provider. In any case, you should try to get as much information as possible before subscribing.

What Is Anonymous Web Surfing?

by Suzy Quid

What is anonymous web surfing and how is it related to online privacy? Simply put, anonymous web surfing is using the Internet without making public information such as the browser you are using, your IP address, your computer system, your location, etc.

It might not be obvious to you, especially if you are not technically inclined, but whenever you visit a website, you are allowing the server at the other end to get your IP address. It does not make sense to prevent this, because without your IP address, the server running the website that you are visiting will not know where to return information to you, and all you will see in your browser is a blank page or an error message. Aside from your IP address, your browsing history of the website (i.e. times you visited the website, links you clicked, data you entered) are recorded by the other server. Typically, companies use this kind of information for statistical, marketing, technical or legal purposes. Your company or school may have some Internet usage policies that necessitate the configuration of servers and firewalls to keep track of your Internet activities.

Anonymous surfing is done through an anonymous browser based proxy (a.k.a anonymizing proxy). This kind of website allows you to enter the URL of the web page or website that you want to visit, and the service will direct you to it while hiding your information from the other server. The website you visited will have no way to determine your IP address or location, because it would seem that all requests for information came from the proxy.

In reality, however, things are not that simple. Although companies offering anonymizing proxy services promise not to divulge your information, law enforcement agencies do have access to these records, and it is not unlikely that these will be used for surveillance purposes.

And how long will it take before the server administrator in your office or school notices that you are using an anonymizing proxy? It is also possible to see what websites you are accessing using this method by inspecting the URL\’s embedded in the URL sent to the proxy or doing DNS queries. You may be violating office or school policy, which could be grounds for a reprimand, or worse, dismissal.

Consider also that anonymous surfing does not guarantee the security of sensitive data such as your username, password or credit card information. Some anonymous proxies do not encrypt the data that they are carrying over the Internet, making it easy for hackers and server administrators with malicious intent to steal your log in and credit card details.

There is plenty of information on the Internet on what to look for in a web proxy service for anonymous surfing. Consider also that anonymous web proxy services tend to be unstable and the current list changes constantly. Some services are offered for free, while some are not. Others are available for free but with limited features. To get the full benefit, you must pay one or more fees.

In short, do your homework and read the fine print. Make anonymous web surfing work for you instead of creating potentially bigger problems.

Are Mac Computers Better To Own Than Windows Based Computers?

by Ron Freeman

Computers have been a part of my life for more than twenty years now and I don\’t know what I would do without them. They sure have advanced a lot over the years.

Those first computers that were so slow and had to have disks in them so they could function are obsolete, and now super machines have taken the world by storm and can be bought for a price that is quite affordable.

PCs are what I used growing up and I really liked using the systems that were Windows-based for quite a while. I had a very good understanding of them and could easily make use of all the available software.

Sometime later is when I made the decision to try a Mac instead. The great benefit of making use of these computers was something I had been hearing about for a while.

I was told by some people that a Mac would not slow down like a PC does and would not have viruses exposed to it either. The result would be a computer that is going to last so much longer, thus really offsetting the fact that the price I would pay would be nearly doubled.

Well I chose to buy one due to all the recommendations my friends gave me. After the fact, this is what I can say to you concerning this decision. I am extremely glad that I made the decision to take this route.

Yes, I do miss my PC, as well as all the important pieces of software that I ran on it; however, I have just discovered the way to alleviate that problem. All you need to do is install a piece of software, such as VMware or Parallels, and then you can do that same thing by yourself.

Try out a Mac if you\’re looking for a new computer. I can officially say that I\’m a converted Apple lover after many years of using PCs. I have a healthier computer that runs faster and for the first time ever, I have a computer that hasn\’t shown its signs of age after a few years.
